United to End Violence Against Women
On the 29th of November 2024, UNID@S event, for the third consecutive year, brought together community members to talk and reflect on ending violence against women as part of the 16 Days of Activism campaign. This year, we were honoured to have the participation of organisations that have been fighting for decades to end violence against women (LAWA - Latin American Women's Aid and LAWRS - Latin American Women's Rights Service) and for the improvement of the quality of life and social integration of Latin Americans (IRMO – Indoamerican Refugee and Migrant Organisation).
Domestic violence can happen to anyone. However, in the case of migrant women, these problems can be exacerbated by factors such as language barrier, socioeconomic inequalities and lack of information on how to navigate the British system, which contributes to the perpetuation of the cycle of violence. This event came, once again, to raise awareness on migrant victim-survivors struggles. We believe initiatives like this can positively influence a free-violent, more conscious and humanised society.
Thank you to the women in our community who shared their testimonies and our brilliant guest speakers! And the support of London Borough of Lambeth, with the participation of Lambeth Leader, Cllr Claire Holland and the Gaia Centre. And also for the continued support and recognition of our work by representatives of the Portuguese Embassy and General Consulates of Portugal and Brazil in London. And our funders The London Community Foundation, Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales Walcot Foundation.
Our extended heartfelt thank you to the partnerships of affection, art and activism of MinA | Migrants in Action, Samba Sisters Collective and @miss.alberto, who brought their artistic expressions as the most beautiful way to resist violence and transform our lives into safer, more welcoming and collaborative environments.
Let’s continue UNID@S (United) to end violence against women!
A BIG THANK YOU from all of us at Respeito, and see you next year!
